PCR tests are used to see if you currently have COVID-19. CHB Medical use gold standard PCR tests including our Day 2 and Day 8 PCR tests.

If a positive result is returned, then you must isolate to help keep others safe and stop transmission.

The PCR test is designated to detect the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19. The test is currently used in the UK in hospitals and the community to see if someone is infected with coronavirus.

The test uses a lab technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect minute amounts of genetic material (RNA) from the coronavirus in a swab taken from your nose or throat.

You will perform your samples using a gentle and non-invasive swab. We will provide you with clear instructions on how to take your swab in your test kits.

PCR tests are the gold standard for detection of SARS-CoV-2. The accuracy of a PCR test is measured
by two factors: Sensitivity and Specificity.

Sensitivity measures how often a positive result is detected for people who have the virus.

Specificity measures the test’s ability to generate a negative result for people who do not have COVID-19

For example, a test with 90% specificity will provide a negative test result to 90% of people who did not have the virus. The sensitivity of a test can be affected by several factors such as the assay used by the laboratory, the limit of detection used, the viral load within the sample, and the sample collection technique.

RT-PCR test assays are widely considered to have both a specificity and sensitivity greater than
95%

There are 4 outcomes of your test:

Positive – You are infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Please immediately follow Government Guidelines to isolate along with your household.

Negative – You are not infected with the virus. Please continue to take sensible precautions.

Inconclusive – Typically a borderline positive/negative result. You require retesting.

Invalid – Occurs in 1-3% of samples. Typically (but not exclusively) this arises when insufficient human material is present on the swab sample.

All outcomes are subject to laboratory fees and are non-refundable.

If your Day 2 test result is positive, you do not need to take the Day 8 test, but you must quarantine until day 13. If your Day 8 test result is positive, you must quarantine until day 19.

You must isolate in the same place for the full isolation period and are not permitted to change locations.

Permitted quarantine locations include your own home, a friend or family home. A hotel, or temporary accommodation other than a managed quarantine hotel. You must provide the correct quarantine location on your Passenger Locator Form
